Pepenadores de Tapachula
Los zopilotes extienden sus alas imponentes y brincan de una colina a la siguiente. Incluso ellos tienen precio en Linda Vista, donde no solo se hurga para sacarle provecho al plástico, metal, y papel; aquí todo se vende, y hasta los brujos vienen por los buitres.
Linda Vista, es el nombre de la colonia de Tapachula donde está ubicado, desde hace unos 25 años, el basurero municipal, hogar de zopilotes, basura tapachuleña y 97 familias Guatemaltecas, la mayoría aún sin papeles para ninguno de sus miembros.
Pepenadores le llaman en México a estos trabajadores que se zambullen en los desechos de otros para encontrar algo de valor, algo que puedan vender a quien quiera reutilizarlo. Pero este grupo de pepenadores guatemalteco hoy, según unos, no puede vender a quién quiera. El comprador es solo uno, o varios "prestanombres", el precio lo pone ese comprador monopólico. Constantemente amenazados con la figura imponente de la policía o migración, los pepenadores de Linda Vista trabajan al rededor de 11 horas diarias para ganar unos 5 dólares.
Los pepenadores de Linda Vista son Guatemaltecos, ilegales, indocumentados. A los pepenadores de Linda Vista les amenazan los mismos funcionarios del ayuntamiento recordándoles que están en su país sin haber sido invitados. Los pepenadores se organizan a pesar del miedo. Pepenadores (Scavengers) of Tapachula
The vultures extend their majestic wings and jump from hill to hill. Even they have a price in Linda Vista, where not only they dig to take advantage from the plastic, metal and paper; here everything is for sale, and even the sorcerers come for the vultures.
Linda Vista, it’s the name of the colony of Tapachula, where for over 25 years the municipal dump, has been home of vultures, garbage and 97 Guatemalan families, most of them still without documents for any of their members. Pepeneadores is de common term in Mexico for these workers that dig in the waste of other to find something of value, something they can sell to someone and re-use it. But this group of Guatemalan pepeneadores today, according to some of them, are unable to sell to anyone they want. They have a single buyer or several “prestanombres” (name-lenders), and thus the price is set by this monopoly buyer. Constantly threatened by the imposing figure of the migration police, the pepenadores of Linda Vista work around 11 hours every day to earn about 5 dollars.
The Linda Vista pepenadores are Guatemalan, illegal and undocumented. They have been threatened by city officials and reminded that they are uninvited in their country. The pepenadores are organizing despites the fear. The pepenadores came to stay.
